If you haven’t guessed from the title, this post is going to be more of my ramblings. Tonight I was looking back through my family blog to try and find a company for a friend of mine. She, like many of us, have decided to make our blogs into family scrap books. As I was looking for the name of the company that I KNOW I had linked to (which I didn’t end up finding by the way), I realized that my blog has kind of evolved into many different things. It’s been over a year since I separated my business blog and family blog, but in that year, as I’ve become busier and busier, I’ve neglected my poor family blog. In my own defense, it’s HARD keeping up with one blog, let alone two, a family , a business, etc. So I’ve been adding in a few personal things here and there in this blog. I thought that would be fine, but as I was reading back over some of the old family blog posts, I was a little sad that I didn’t document things so carefully anymore. I really love to write….if you couldn’t tell. And it’s not normal writing, it’s just me thinking and it all spilling out onto the keyboard, translating over onto the internet. I’ve told people before that it’s my outlet and I’ve been so caught up in my “business” that I’ve lost the enjoyment and outlet to…well.. ramble, and to talk about things other than business. So THANK you Eileen for giving me a reason to go back to my family blog and remember why I started blogging and bring me back to center!
The funny thing is I don’t even think Eileen reads this blog of mine, so I’ll have to tell her when I see her a church on Sunday!
So. Back to my thoughts for today. I was talking with ANOTHER friend the other day about what to do with all the stuff your kids bring home from school. If you’re a parent you know that each year a small forest PER child is brought home and what do you do with it all? My answer was that I throw most of it away. Of course, it was pointed out that you have to do this when you’re kids AREN’T looking. I made the mistake of doing it right after school one day. BIG MISTAKE. Here’s how it went down….
When my kids come home from school, they get out their folders and things they brought home, tell me about their day and show me what they brought home. Sometimes it’s a picture they drew, sometimes it’s a stack of papers that have been graded by the teacher and the kids show me what they’ve learned in Math or reading or something. So after they tell me about their day, they go off and play and then I purge. Well one of my kids had finished telling me about how they can do fractions (HELLO? Fractions in 1st grade?) and they were explaining to me how they can take a pizza and make a cut and then it’s a 1/2 and so on. So they explained their whole packet and then went off to play as normal. So when they left, I thoughtlessly pitched the packet in the trash. A few minutes later they came in to get their snack and throw their wrappers away and suddenly it happend.
“MOM, why is my packet in the trash? I worked so hard on it and I got such good grades, how did it get in the trash?”
My stomach dropped! What did I say to that? Sorry friends, but I did NOT take the high road and explain…..I told a little fib and said “Oh MY GOSH, I don’t know, maybe it slipped off the counter or something…hurry get it out”
which we did and disaster was averted, they went happily off to play, and then a few days later it secretly made its way back in the recycle bin NOT the trash where they would maybe see again. It that horrible? Maybe, but they’ve never asked about it again. I DO keep art work and special papers…again, my 8 year old is learning how to make a power point presentation and can precisely name all the bones in the human body from the waist up……Can you believe it?
Anyway my point is, that I’ve now purchased a bin with 3 drawers to keep the kids stuff in for the year. THEN, me being the organized person I am, I have a plastic bin for each child that I will keep stuff in by the year. Each year I’ll put all the treasured artwork and papers they wanted to keep – OR, I wanted to keep- in a big manilla envelope labeled “CHILDS NAME-AND THE YEAR”. It’s a little scary how excited I was to roll that bin in the laundry room, with their names all labeled, with my labeler I might add. SO excited for it!
So that’s it. Those are my thoughts for today. I’m still behind in my processing and am feverishly trying to catch up as well as trying to deal with slow vendors that are KILLING me! But I’ve decided to take the Zen approach and….breaaaatheee![]()
Some VERY exciting news will be announced soon as well as my annual participation in one of the COOLEST non profit programs in the photography industry. Last year Rachelle was the happy recipient, who will it be this Christmas EVE? Stay tuned for more details!
And just because I need to post an image with this, I’ll leave you with this image that makes me “ooooo” every time I see it. I’ve been ordering and planning out the walls of my studio this week and this will be a 30×40 split gallery wrap in my office (split into 3 pieces). I love it and when Jackie moves away to Hawaii in a few short months, I’m going to look at this image and just close my eyes and remember squishing and kissing her chubby little baby girl all over her chubby neck. I love her!
